You can quickly crop and size an image to a specific dimension. By clicking the 'lock' icon button, ImageWell goes into crop and size to fit mode. In this mode, you can type in the exact width and height of the image you want and ImageWell will size the image to that dimension. You can also offset the image within the cropped area to your liking.

For example, we have an image we want to size to 180 by 135 pixels, but the original image is the wrong aspect ratio for these dimensions. Notice in this example the image was sized to a width of 180. In locked mode, the height is automatically calculated based on the aspect of the picture. In this case the height is 175, but we need a height of 135. All we need to do, is click the 'lock' button to go to the Auto Crop/Size mode.

Auto Crop/Size to The Rescue

In Auto crop and size mode, we can enter a height of 135 without changing the width. Or in other words, the width and height can be changed independently. Enter 180 for the width and 135 for the height. ImageWell will resize the image to those exact dimensions. The portion of the image that doesn't fit within those dimensions - because the aspect of the original doesn't match the aspect of the new image - is automatically cropped off.

We can then move the 'Offset' slider to position the image within the cropped area. Sometimes you might want to offset the crop so more is cropped from one side than the other. Simply use the slider to adjust the cropped area. To return to locked (or constrained sizing) mode, simply click the 'un/lock' icon button again.

Manually Cropping Your Image

Cropping is not limited to the auto crop/size feature in ImageWell. To manually crop an image to a specific area and size, click the 'Edit' button in the bottom left corner to open the Edit Window.

In the top right corner of the Edit window, you'll see the manual cropping tools. The first button is the 'Select Object' button. When this button is highlighted, you can select objects on the canvas, and position and resize them. Go ahead and click on your image to select it.

When you click on the image you'll notice that grab handles will appear, as well as a rotation control and an image scaler bar. The rotation control will rotate the image and the image sizing scaler will scale or zoom the image from 0 to 200%.

Click on the manual Crop button. The cursor changes to a cross hair and you can crop an area of the image by clicking and dragging the mouse. As you drag the mouse you'll see the cropped area as opaque and the area outside the cropping as semi-transparent. Click the Select button to complete the crop. After an image has been cropped, a 'Remove Crop' button appears beside the rotation control. Click this button to remove the crop.

Don't worry if your crop isn't perfect - ImageWell cropping is "non-destructible" which means you can edit the crop easily and quickly later on or delete the crop completely.

Editing the Crop Area

While in crop mode you can edit the cropped area. Click on the crop tool to highlight the crop area. Use the grab handles to resize the crop area. Clicking and dragging while the mouse is inside the crop area, will reposition the cropped area. Click the 'Remove Crop' button to delete the crop completely.

Adjusting the Image

While in Crop mode, you can use the rotate and image scale controls to adjust the image independent of the crop area rectangle. Give it a whirl so you can get a better idea how this works - you'll see the image rotates without affecting the orientation of the crop area rectangle. When you use the scaler, you'll see the size of the image adjusts, but the crop area rectangle remains the same.

When in Crop mode, a third cropping tool appears right beside the manual crop button - this is the 'Move Image' button and lets you move the image independent of the crop area rectangle. Click on the Move Image button and give it a try - click the image and move it to a new position within the cropped area. This button disappears when you are in normal editing mode.

Once you are done, click on the 'Select Object' button to return to normal editing mode. In normal editing mode, you can do further resizing and rotating of your newly cropped image. At any time you can re-edit the crop of the image, by selecting the image and clicking the Crop button.
